Educational Programs
School Performances/ Assemblies
Cunamacué presents school assemblies of traditional Afro-Peruvian music and dance for all grade levels. Students are introduced to the rhythms, dances and instruments within Afro-Peruvian culture. Through our performances students learn the history and culture of African descendants in Peru. The musicians will introduce students to instruments such as the Cajon (a wooden box), Quijada (a donkey’s jaw), and Cajita (a small wooden box the player hangs around his/her neck, opens and closes the lid and strikes the sides with a stick). The dancers will demonstrate traditional dances such as Festejo (most popular and joyous rhythm within Afro-Peruvian culture), Zapateo (footwork), Zamacueca (predecessor to many dances in Latin America), and Lando (derived from the Brazilian Lundu).
Dance Residencies
Afro-Peruvian music and dance is a unique blend of African, Spanish, and Indigenous elements. During our residencies, students will be introduced to the traditional dance forms within Afro-Peruvian culture and learn dances such as the Festejo, Zamacueca, and Son De Los Diablos. Through dance, students will be made aware of the historical and cultural perspective of the dances, as well as be introduced to the instruments in Afro-Peruvian culture. Appropiate for K-12th grade.
